The Threads That Bind Us: A Family Legacy of Craftmanship

I have grown up surrounded by the hum of sewing machines and the smell of cut fabric. Much like our sewing process, it brought several pieces, such as hard work, determination, and skill, to shape who I am today. My name is Katelyn, the eldest daughter in a family business, and this is our story- a journey of dedication, family bonds, and the memories that stitch us together.

The Roots in Michigan

Our family business roots began with my third great grandmother, Ida, who was born in the late 1800s in Michigan. She was an upholsterer at home while her husband farmed. She passed her sewing knowledge down to her children and in turn to my grandfather, Carl. He and his wife, Dorothy, utilized this generational knowledge to create the original Waterland Canvas. Back then, it was called Water-Land Top Shop, and he opened his doors on April 28th, 1961 in St. Charles, Michigan.

My dad, Chet, grew up watching them work and learning the craft. When he was in his mid 20's, he moved down to Charleston, where he met my mom, Ada. Together, they planted new roots and started the family business in 1989. Dad’s passion for sewing and commitment to quality never wavered, even as the business grew and changed.

Growing Up in the Business

Charleston became our home, and the business became part of our daily lives. My brother, CJ, and I practically grew up in the workshop. Dad would push me around the marinas in a little cart while he worked, making sure I was safe but still a part of the action. Sometimes, CJ and I would go outside and catch roly-polys or take naps on the foam cushions scattered around the workspace.

It was a unique childhood, blending work and play in a way that only a family business can offer. Our customers often remember us as kids running around, and it’s a special feeling to see familiar faces who have watched our family grow alongside the business.

Family Ties That Keep Us Strong

My dad’s sister, Beverly, also grew up in the business and now works alongside me in the office. We love working together every day, and it’s fun keeping the family legacy alive together. My husband, Austin,

has joined us too as a pattern maker/installer, bringing new energy and support to the team.

My mom, Ada, has been the heart of the family, balancing the demands of the business with caring for all of us. Her strength and dedication inspire me every day as I manage the office and help keep everything running smoothly.

What Makes Our Business Special

Our family business is more than just sewing. It’s about the memories we create and the relationships we build. Customers don’t just come for the products; they come for the personal touch, attentive care, and the story behind every stitch. Growing up in this environment has taught me the value of hard work, patience, and pride in what we do.

Here are some things that make our business stand out:

  • Generations of experience passed down through hands-on learning

  • A close-knit family team that supports each other every day

  • Strong connections with loyal customers who feel like part of the family

  • A blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern touches to meet today’s needs

  • Lots of Shop Dogs who keep us entertained and greet customers daily

Memories That Shape Our Future

Looking back, I treasure the small moments that made growing up in the business so special: Dad laughing and pushing me around in carts at the marinas, CJ and I napping on foam cushions, and Aunt Beverly and Mom working alongside us- all create a vivid picture of family life intertwined with work.

These memories remind me of why I am proud to carry on this legacy. Running the office and being part of this journey is a privilege. It’s about honoring the past while building a future that stays true to our roots.

I’m Katelyn, and I’m proud to be part of this legacy that began with my grandparents in Michigan and continues to thrive here in Charleston. Everything we do, we do as a family and for our customers who are like family. We invite you to be part of our story, whether as a customer, friend, or fellow family business enthusiast. Feel free to reach out if you have any memories you'd like to share. We would love to hear them and reminisce with you!
